May Day 2018: Resistance Across North America

1504

May Day 2018 started out with a bang, as a large rent strike was launched in Hamilton, Ontario, the mass #RedforEd teacher’s strike protests continued in Arizona, pipeline encampments and occupations continued, and pickets, strikes, and rowdy demonstrations took place across Canada, the US, and Mexico. Students in New York at the New School have also occupied their cafeteria in solidarity with workers who are fighting for a new contract, and port workers with the ILWU union also launched a strike across ports along the West Coast.

Meanwhile across the US, anarchists, anti-authoritarians, and autonomists took to the streets and their communities to take action, celebrate, and come together. Many other mass demonstrations were also held, as anti-capitalist, labor, and community groups organized mass rallies, demonstrations, and marches. The actions on May Day were varied, from strikes, to occupations of buildings in Vancouver against rent increases, to clashes with the police in Puerto Rico. This growth in militancy, self-organization, and direct action shows that both confidence and anger is growing within the exploited and the excluded.
