Action News

Proud Boy Leader Tiny Toese Shot in Leg As Proud Boys Run Rampage in Olympia, Washington

Proud Boys went on a rampage in downtown Olympia, Washington the other week while doing security for a larger anti-mask rally, after antifascist opposition failed to materialize despite claims from the far-Right that it would. While marching around Downtown like a mob while chanting, “Fuck antifa,” Proud Boys attacked a left-wing journalist, harassed people on the street, and attempted to attack a small group at a bus deport. The incident ended with one person reportedly discharging a weapon at the advancing Proud Boys, who were heavily armed, hitting Proud Boy leader, Tiny Toese in the leg.

According to Daily Kos:

When counter-protesters failed to appear at an anti-vaccination event for which they were providing “security,” frustrated Proud Boys formed a pack and began hunting for “antifa” on the streets of Olympia. They assaulted an independent female journalist who had to seek refuge in a local tavern. They also began assaulting random people on the street they identified as “antifa” and began chasing them with clubs, baseball bats, and Mace; in the end, one of their victims drew a gun at a bus stop and fired several rounds, one of which apparently struck Toese.

So the Proud Boys, with Toese in the lead, went hunting for them, videos show. A group of about 50 of them, toting weapons like batons and bats and bear spray, marched through downtown Olympia toward Olympia City Hall, roughly a mile away, chanting “Fuck antifa!” as they went. Mercer was planning to shoot a video there later that afternoon, and the brawlers were responding to reports of counterprotesters at that location.

Along the way, they apparently encountered various activists, as well as simply random pedestrians, they identified as “antifa,” and began harassing them. One of these was the Portland-based independent journalist Alissa Azar, who had covered this group of Proud Boys at street brawls in Portland previously and was there to monitor their activities Saturday. They apparently recognized Azar and surrounded her, pulling on her hair and mauling her. She screamed and ran away, finding safety in a nearby tavern.

Random passersby were apparently assaulted as well. An African-American man with dreadlocks told a videographer that “I got a gun pulled on me by a Proud Boy earlier, for no fucking reason.”

Videos show Proud Boys apparently running through Olympia side streets in pursuit of “antifa,” at the end of which gunfire can be heard. In apparently pursuing “antifa” suspects, the men had diverted off their path toward City Hall and wound up at the city’s main bus-transit depot downtown near State Street.

It was there that Toese, as other videos show, encountered an antifascist who apparently took the baseball bat he wielded as a serious threat and opened fire. Video shows Toese limping away from the encounter, then collapsing on a nearby street corner and surrounded by people who provide him with medical attention.

Toese was transported to a nearby hospital, treated for his wounds—which were deemed non-life-threatening—and released.

Antifascists Rally Against Far-Right Church at Planned Parenthood In Rural Towns Across Oregon

Antifascists and community members in Eugene, Salem, Bend and other rural towns across Oregon have been successful in shutting down and countering a series of rallies from the far-Right group, The Church at Planned Parenthood (TCAPP), known for attracting Proud Boys and other far-Right street gangs to pop-up rallies across the Pacific Northwest.

According to a report from Double Sided Media:

The Church at Planned Parenthood is a Christian group who “[worships] at the gates of hell,” according to their website. Their “Contending For Life Tour” had traveled to Planned Parenthood facilities in Bend, Oregon and both Twin Falls and Boise, Idaho prior to their Eugene visit.

As it became obvious that the counter-protest of around 100 people—including several dozen in black bloc with homemade shields—was larger than expected, the small group of regular pro-life protesters and another, even smaller, group of militant-looking right-wingers left.

Eugene-Springfield’s antifascist and pro-choice community had successfully out-numbered and out-protested not one, but two, Planned Parenthood facilities and ran the TCAPP away at least two times. In Bend, TCAPP didn’t even show up.

“Eugene fucking rocked it today! Anti-fascists showed the fash that they’re not welcome here,” the Eugene Youth Liberation Front said on Twitter. “This shows that successful anti-fascist/radical actions are able to happen here again and it’s possible to get numbers out to those.”

The news spread up north, too. “Today solidified The Church at Planned Parenthood’s ‘Contending For Life’ tour as a complete failure,” Corvallis Antifa said on Twitter. “TCAPP is losing any power they once had thanks to grassroots resistance in the communities they attempt to terrorize!”

Flyer Campaign Outs KKK Leader in Colorado Connected to David Duke and ‘The Order’ Paramilitary Group

Antifascists in Colorado outed a KKK leader through a flyering campaign who was caught vandalizing a PRIDE flag display in Louisville, Colorado. According to a post on Front Range Antifa:

Fred Morris Wilkins, 74, of Superior, Colorado is a longtime white supremacist organizer. On June 2nd, 2021, Fred stole a number of Pride flags from a display in Louisville, Colorado, and put a Confederate flag in their place. Wilkins served as the leader of the Colorado Knights of the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) through the 1970’s. An associate of David Lane, Fred made headlines in 1979 for threatening the life of Jewish talk radio host Alan Berg, who would be murdered by members of The Order just five years later. Wilkins left the Klan in 1980, following former Grand Wizard David Duke to organize with the National Association for the Advancement of White People (NAAWP).

Special Report: Boogaloo Boys Organize Anti-War Rally With Libertarians and Greens in DC

On September 11th, an antiwar rally called #EndtheDamnWars, hosted in part by the Michigan Boogaloo Boys, took place in Washington DC, bringing out around 50-60 people. Boogaloo Boy Magnus Panvidya (Zackary Dougherty aka “Zakk”) organized the coalition in an effort to unite various political forces under a unified antiwar banner, mainly networking with Green Party and Libertarian Party members. Through Free Assange activist Kimber Maddox, Zakk was able to organize a national network of local events as well as the main rally in DC without having attention centered on his Boogaloo crew. As antifascists, we feel its important to bring attention to this development, and any attempt by the far-Right to make inroads into the wider Left.

The night before the DC rally, Zakk met up with Japhari Jones aka BLM757. Jones has been denounced by BLM DC organizers for years as a troll and someone not to be worked with. Despite some mishaps with sound systems, flight cancellations, and groups pulling out at the last minute, Zakk managed to get 59 people to attend the rally in DC, though he was aware the rallies’ dwindling support was due to his involvement noting that Green Party National told its members and affiliate chapters to stay away from the events.

On the day of the rally in DC, several Boogaloo Boys were spotted in attendance. The DC rally also attracted Grayzone editor, Max Blumenthal, Code Pink’s Medea Benjamin, and Scott Horton, Libertarian and editor of AntiWar.com. Some of this crew attended a Free Assange event the following Sunday. Zakk intends to further use his new coalition to build with segments of the Libertarian Party.

Boogaloo Boys and friends in DC

The Boogaloo Boys have a history of attempting to embed themselves within autonomous and leftist struggles and coalitions in an effort to advance their far-Right, reactionary-capitalist/Libertarian politics. For an in-depth look at why anarchists and antifascists should reject the Boogaloo Boys in our organizing spaces, check out this critique from Solidarity and Defense and this article from Lone Gunman AFA.

Anonymous Claims Massive Hack of Hosting Provider for Far-Right Websites

Hackers with Anonymous have hit Epik, one of the last major domain hosting companies for some of the biggest far-Right names (Gab, Parler, etc) on the web. According to Mother Jones:

As first reported Monday by journalist Steven Monacelli, the hacker claims that “a decade’s worth of data from the company” has been obtained, including all domain purchases, domain transfers, and unredacted website registration data that could shed light on individuals and groups behind extremist or hate sites.

“This dataset is all that’s needed to trace actual ownership and management of the fascist side of the Internet that has eluded researchers, activists, and, well, just about everybody,” the hacker boasted in announcing the attack.

Emma Best, a key figure with DDoS Secrets, a web archive with a public interest mission of hosting hacked and leaked data, tweeted Tuesday morning that the site was working to obtain the materials and share them with researchers and journalists. The group says it is preparing 180 gigabytes of data from “Epik, known for hosing fascist, white supremacist and other right-wing content.” In a separate tweet, Best noted the group’s history with the hacked-domain registrar, noting that Epik’s services “were used to defame, stalk, and threaten #DDoSSecrets” members after the site hosted data obtained from Gab. “Epik knew. Gab’s CEO knew. They all enabled it,” Best wrote.

Monday’s release announcing the hack called for support for “#OperationJane,” an online pro-abortion rights campaign that promotes flooding websites and tip lines with fake reports after Texas enacted an anti-abortion rights law soliciting citizens to identify anyone participating in or encouraging the procedure. An Epik subsidiary briefly provided support to a prominent tip site related to the new law, but cut virtually all services, with the company telling reporters such a site violated its terms of service.

Armed Neo-Nazi Arrested in DC “On Patrol”

Last Sunday, a neo-Nazi was arrested in DC outside of the DNC building. According to Daily Kos:

Perhaps it was the swastikas festooned on the truck. Whatever it was that caught the attention of a Capitol Police officer on Sunday night, the strangeness of it all led police to check on the situation and eventually arrest the man inside: Donald Craighead, 44, of Oceanside, California. He told the cops he was “on patrol” and muttered white-supremacist talking points; they found a machete and a bayonet—both forbidden weapons in Washington—in the truck and arrested him.

This arrest comes only weeks after a Trump supporter live-streamed an anti-immigrant rant outside of the Library of Congress in DC while threatening to blow up a truck full of explosives before being arrested and days before Trump supporters are expected to rally in support of those facing charges for their role in the attempted storming of the capitol on January 6th.

Proud Boys and Patriot Prayer Target Schools in Vancouver, Washington

Proud Boys in the Pacific Northwest have found a new target: schools. In the last few weeks, groups of Proud Boys, members of Patriot Prayer, anti-vaxxers and beyond, have rallied outside of schools in Vancouver, Washington, forcing the schools to go on lockdown with students reporting harassment from the far-Right.

According to Daily Kos:

[A g]roup of local Proud Boys showed up to support an anti-masking protest outside Skyview High School. They had been encouraged to protest on social media by the local far-right group Patriot Prayer, which had falsely claimed that a Skyview student faced arrest for her refusal to wear a mask.

School authorities placed Skyview—as well as an adjacent middle school and elementary school—on lockdown when several Proud Boys attempted to escort the student into the high school. That student’s mother says her daughter has been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and anxiety, and the mask can trigger panic attacks, leading her to request an exemption from the school’s mask mandate, she told Oregon Public Broadcasting (OPB).

The lockdown disrupted everything inside the school. OPB reported that one student described teachers and faculty guarding the doors inside the building while security guards discussed matters with the Proud Boys.

As OPB reported:

The school went on lockdown after members of the Proud Boys attempted to escort the freshman seeking the medical exemption into the building. The demonstration itself at times became vitriolic. Security guards at the school said some of the protesting women called female students derogatory names. [A student] also said some students were harassed by the anti-mask demonstrators outside the school building.

Along with anti-vaxxers, anti-maskers, and COVID-19 conspiracy theorists, the Proud Boys have remained a fixture at protests against vaccines and mask mandates across the US.

FBI Paid Publisher of Occult Neo-Nazi Books

Vice has learned that the Federal Bureau of Investigation has made payments to a neo-Nazi publishing company in excess of $100,000 since 2003. Court filings indicate that Martinet Press, neo-Nazi publishing house has received payments for their work as federal informant for the FBI. The informant, Joshua Caleb Sutter, is a longtime white supremacist and former high ranking member of the Aryan Nation with ties to various neo-Nazi organizations including the accelerationist group Atomwaffen Division, linked to multiple murders.

Martinet Press prints and distributes a litany of white supremacist and neo-Nazi texts including James Mason’s Siege, William Luther Pierce’s The Turner Diaries, and neo-Nazi occult book Liber 333. Sutter is a convicted felon who began his role as Confidential Informant in relation to the federal case against former AWD leader Kaleb Cole. For all the details, click the link above.

Clearview AI Markets Controversial Facial Recognition Technology to Law Enforcement Agencies Overseas

In addition to a concerning trend of United States law enforcement agencies of every level having access to Clearview AI’s controversial facial recognition technology, Buzzfeed reports that Clearview has taken their marketing oversees to law enforcement agencies across the globe. According to Buzzfeed‘s investigation, many of the countries who’s agencies have been caught using trial and paid versions of the technology may have violated surveillance and data collecting laws in their respective jurisdictions. For instance, Buzzfeed reports:

In the European Union, authorities are assessing whether the use of Clearview violated the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), a set of broad online privacy laws that requires companies processing personal data to obtain people’s informed consent. The Dutch Data Protection Authority told BuzzFeed News that it’s “unlikely” that police agencies’ use of Clearview was lawful, while France’s National Commission for Informatics and Freedoms said that it has received “several complaints” about Clearview that are “currently being investigated.” One regulator in Hamburg has already deemed the company’s practices illegal under the GDPR and asked it to delete information on a German citizen.

A 2019 document obtained by Buzzfeed investigators indicates that Clearview AI’s technology is linked to at least law enforcement agencies in 22 countries. After February 2020 and following a handful of government investigations, many countries have taken steps to address the use of this kind of technology inside their borders. After one such investigation, Canada declared Clearview’s practices in the country illegal:

Prior to that declaration, employees from at least 41 entities within the Canadian government — the most of any country outside the US — were listed in internal data as having used Clearview. Those agencies ranged from police departments in midsize cities like Timmins, a 41,000-person city where officers ran more than 120 searches, to major metropolitan law enforcement agencies like the Toronto Police Service, which is listed in the data as having run more than 3,400 searches as of February 2020.

Usage of the controversial technology has not been limited to law enforcement agencies. Investigations show that individuals from other levels and government agencies have also had access. The Office of Privacy Commissioner in Canada ruled in June that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) use of Clearview’s technology violates the countries privacy laws. RCMP disputes this ruling.

In Saudi Arabia, the Artificial Intelligence Center of Advanced Studies had run searches using the technology.  Individuals associated with Mubadala Investment Company, a private, sovereign wealth fund in the United Arab Emirates also ran searches. According to Buzzfeed, a number of countries in the Middle East had also run searches, reigniting concerns over human rights violations and the use of repressive governments access to the database.

As with the United States, Clearview marketed to law enforcement agencies across Europe by having a presence at police conferences and offering free trials, where it was often presented as a tool to help find predators and victims of child sex abuse.” Agencies from Belgium, Spain, Finland and France, as well as the larger Europol have all used the technology to a degree:

Many experts and civil rights groups have argued that there should be a ban on governmental use of facial recognition. Regardless of whether a facial recognition software is accurate, groups like the Algorithmic Justice League argue that without regulation and proper oversight it can cause overpolicing or false arrests.

“Our general stance is that facial recognition tech is problematic, so governments should never use it,” [Christoph Schmon, international policy director for the Electronic Frontier Foundation] said. Not only is there a high chance that police officers will misuse facial recognition, he said, but the technology tends to misidentify people of color at higher rates than it does white people.

Business Insider reports that the United States Army has also contracted with Clearview AI. In addition to similar forceful, strongly worded, and tactical marketing, documents obtained by Business Insider indicate that the army was given contracted access to the technology at a discounted rate. Other information shows that the Criminal Investigation Command, the unit that investigate serious crimes involving active service members as well as civilian army workers is the unit for which the contract was obtained:

The contract, signed in September 2020, shows that the Army gets a discounted rate of Clearview’s services for five years at $15,000 — meaning it can pay $1,000 per license that normally costs $2,000. The Army paid for 15 Clearview licenses in total. Although the discount lasts five years, the contract has to be renewed each year, and this one is set to expire next month.

Nate Wessler — a staff attorney for the Speech, Privacy, and Technology Project at the ACLU, which is suing Clearview AI for violating the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act — told Insider that he’s concerned about the Army’s Clearview use flying under the radar.

Given the evident acceptance of the technology across the globe, the heavy marketing by Clearview, as well as the snails-paced bureaucratic investigations that have followed, it’s safe to assume that this controversial and problematic technology will be the feature of policing for the immediate future.

Court Upholds White Supremacist Dylann Roof’s Death Sentence Despite Appeals

Associated Press reports that a unanimous three-judge panel of the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond rejected arguments stating Dylann Roof ought to be spared the death sentence due to incompetence. In 2015, Roof walked into Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston and opened fire the on the bible study group, killing nine people in an act of brutal racism. “In 2017, Roof became the first person to be sentenced to death for a federal hate crime.”

Among other arguments, Roof’s attorney argued that Roof sentence should be vacated because he had not properly been evaluated for competency:

The 4th Circuit found that the trial judge did not commit an error when he found Roof was competent to stand trial and issued a scathing rebuke of Roof’s crimes.

“Dylann Roof murdered African Americans at their church, during their Bible-study and worship. They had welcomed him. He slaughtered them. He did so with the express intent of terrorizing not just his immediate victims at the historically important Mother Emanuel Church, but as many similar people as would hear of the mass murder,” the panel wrote in is ruling.

“No cold record or careful parsing of statutes and precedents can capture the full horror of what Roof did. His crimes qualify him for the harshest penalty that a just society can impose,” the judges wrote.

According to the AP, last month Attorney General Merrick Garland issued a moratorium that halted all federal executions. This moratorium is meant to provide congress with time to review it’s execution policies and procedures. Click the link for the full article.

The Marine Corps to Neo-Nazi Pipeline

In a recent Vice article, reporters shed light on the ever-present problem of neo-Nazism in the Marine Corps. According to Vice, in the last three years, at least seven former Marines have openly aligned themselves with neo-Nazi organizing of varying degrees. This article comes on the heels of two former marines being charged conspiracy to destroy a power grid. The report goes on to discuss other marines who have been outed as neo-Nazis. Here is a rundown:

  • Christopher Polhaus: Polhaus (aka “The Hammer” aka Telegram Nazi) runs a Telegram channel with around 1000 followers and sells neo-nazi swag like shirts, stickers, masks (yes, those masks) and flags, with a variety of Nazi insignia such as sonnenrads, swastikas, appreciation for famous neo-Nazi figures like George Lincoln Rockwell, among other things. Leaked communications show Polhaus suggesting how to hypothetically and violently take over Maine to create a white ethno-state.
  • Liam Collins and Jordan Duncan: Collins and Duncan were formerly stationed at Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, North Carolina. The two plotted the armed assault on an undisclosed power grid with several others. They met in the now defunct Iron March Discord server. The two discussed the use of a chemical called Thermite to burn through the transformers as well as “stole military gear, including magazines for assault-style rifles.”
  • Justin Hermanson: Hermanson was charged in connection to the assault on the power grid with Collins and Duncan.
  • Vasilios Pistolis: Pistolis was an early member of the neo-Nazi accelerationist group Atomwaffen Division. He attended the deadly Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville,Virginia. Following the rally, the AWD and Traditionalist Worker’s Party member bragged online about how he assaulted counter-protesters. Propublica states, “photographs taken at the rally show Pistolis clubbing an unidentified counter-protester with a wooden flagpole.”
  • Ryan Burchfield: Burchfield was a member of Atomwaffen Division’s sister group, The Base. He was deported from Ukraine for his neo-Nazi ties after traveling to the country to be a foreign fighter in the war in Donbass.
  • Travis Owens: Owens plotted to kill members of the Democratic National Committee as well as people of color and is reported to have had ties with AWD. Owens was active-duty at the time.
  • Nicholas Tindall: Tindall is a former marine who was “was implicated in a domestic terrorist plot against critical infrastructure in the U.S. with unnamed co-conspirators.”

For it’s part, the Marine Corps believes it takes swift action when it’s members have been outed for their connection with neo-Nazi organizing but it’s pretty clear that between the toxic masculinity, tactical training, and fervent nationalism, the Marine Corps will likely continue to see right-wing extremists in it’s ranks.

Brazil’s Leader is Preparing for a Fascist Takeover – His Followers Trained in Nebraska

Seeing Red, a group of grassroots left-wing journalists in Nebraska, recently published an article connecting Brazil’s right-wing leader, Jair Bolsonaro, to a far-Right extremist organization called 88 Tactical in Omaha, Nebraska. Seeing Red breaks down the 88 Tactical business and fortress, it’s connections to Jair Bolsonaro’s sons, as well as the famed members of the Gracie Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu family.

According to Seeing Red, 88 Tactical is a giant compound located west of Omaha with “a gigantic Nazi eagle and Nazi code.” The Nazi code refers to the used of the number 88. 88 is code for the eight letter of the alphabet twice, or, HH. HH is shorthand for ‘Heil Hitler,” a neo-Nazi dog-whistle commonly used among certain factions of the far-right. 88 Tactical leaves little to the imagination in this regard. 88 Tactical provides weapons and other tactical training, as well as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training. Their compound serves members of law enforcement nationally and internationally as well as right-wing Brazillian leader Jair Bolsonaro’s sons.

Eduardo Bolsonaro’s trip to massive weapons expo, Shot Show, in Las Vegas was sponsored by 88 Tactical. Seeing Red ominously writes:

At the time of this writing, Bolsonaro, who has legions of militia members loyal to him and more armed than ever after he loosened the nation’s gun laws, is indicating that he will not peacefully cede power if he loses election next year, which polls show is likely. Eduardo, who is currently a legislator, has fascist political leanings, too. Here he is, for example, hanging out with Beatrix von Storch, who is both the granddaughter of Hitler’s finance minister and the deputy leader of the far-right Alternative for Germany party.

One of Bolsonaro’s other sons, Carlos Bolsonaro, also has ties to 88 Tactical, and is currently under investigation in Brazil for a “criminal fake news racket.” Carlos is close friends with Tony Eduardo, a trainer of 88 Tactical in “small arms and combatives” training as well as Jiu-Jitsu. Tony Eduardo has a close relationship with members of the famed Gracie family, who’s founding brothers were linked with far-right and fascist groups. Seeing Red reports that Helio Gracie, founding brother of Gracie Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu was a “uniform-wearing member of the Brazilian fascist Integralista Party in the 1930s.” The hyper-masculine, misogynist, violent legacy of the founding brothers continues to fester in the culture of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, especially on the 88 Tactical compound.

The current Gracie BJJ generation includes Robson Gracie, who gave Jair Bolsonaro an honorary black belt; Igor, who said that Black people use racism as an excuse for laziness; Crosley and Daniel, who believe the 2020 US election was a fraud; and Renzo, who recently tweeted a quote by Hitler’s Holocaust architect Heinrich Himmler and is Jair Bolsonaro’s Ambassador for Tourism.

The current Gracie crop also includes Royce Gracie, who was found to be using “off the charts” levels of steroids and recently worked out a deal with the IRS, who accused him of illegally hiding wealth in foreign bank accounts and fraudulently claiming tax credits for the poor.

Royce Gracie is a business partner of Tony Eduardo, the 88 Tactical employee who is friends with Carlos Bolsonaro.

The compound has served as a training ground for member of US law enforcement including police forces in Oklahoma. Oklahoma City SWAT contracted 88 Tactical paramilitary training camps to train in everything from sniping, use of tactical weapons gear like night-vision and silencers, and yes, grappling and Jiu-Jitsu.

Suffice to say that all of these extensive connections are problematic at best and at worst, something much more insidious. Head over to the blog for the full story.
