On this episode of the It’s Going Down podcast, we speak with Adam F. Naughton, a libertarian socialist and the creator of the website, Not Your Inspiration. With Adam we discuss the current disability justice movement and how it has evolved since the passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in 1990. Adam discusses the difference between neoliberal views on combating abelism and a social, anti-capitalist approach which sees disabled people’s worth outside of the context of the economy.

We also discuss Naughton’s current project, Not Your Inspiration, which seeks to push back against “inspiration porn” that exploits disabled bodies and stories in corporate advertising.
I wanna scoot my motorized wheelchair around a world where a disabled guy learning to drive a car or play the guitar or get groceries on his own is no different than any other guy tackling any other challenge—not clickbait used to increase shareholder profits.
Finally, we talk about the future of these ideas, how people can show solidarity, and also Adam’s evolution from a Right political position to a libertarian socialist one.
