Help Launch subMedia’s New Series: InterRebellium

Announcing a new media project, InterRebellium, from long-time anarchist film collective, subMedia. To support the project, go here.

InterRebellium is an upcoming documentary project from subMedia about the historic wave of protests and uprisings that broke out around the globe between late 2018 and mid 2020. It is planned as a limited ten-part series, featuring interviews with anarchists, anti-colonial militants, and other front-line revolutionaries from:

  • Ecuador
  • Chile
  • Haiti
  • France
  • Hong Kong
  • Lebanon
  • Iraq
  • Sudan
  • Canada
  • The United States

Motivated by the principle and spirit of revolutionary internationalism, we plan to collaborate on the production of each episode with local and diasporic anarchist and anti-colonial filmmakers, artists, and content producers. By doing so, we hope to amplify the voices of those most qualified to tell the stories of these uprisings, to increase the capacity and reach of anarchist media production from the global south, and to forge working relationships with new comrades and co-conspirators in order to pave the way for the further decentralization of the subMedia collective. We also plan to translate the series into multiple languages, to help build solidarity across state-imposed borders.

The title of the series comes from the Latin for ‘between uprisings’. This speaks to what we see as the cyclical nature of revolt, and the critical need to prepare for the struggles ahead. To this end, we plan to use this series as a vehicle to summarize the hard-won tactical and strategic lessons from recent uprisings, and to explore the social, political and military limits that participants ultimately ran up against – so that future movements will be able to learn from, and ultimately surpass them.

As we set out to begin work on this series, we are putting out a two-part call:

  1. For participants of the revolts listed above, who would like to share their stories, or who are otherwise interested in collaborating on this project. We are particularly excited to connect with filmmakers, audio/podcast/radio producers, movement journalists, or other anarchist media collectives from each country.
  2. For supporters willing to donate to make this project financially viable. We would like to establish a modest budget of $1,000 – $2,000 per episode to cover potential travel costs, to pay local videographers and/or purchase gear for local anarchist media collectives – particularly those in the Global South without access to quality video equipment. Any additional funds raised beyond our initial goal will go towards improving the overall quality of the series’ production value.

This is an ambitious project, and we are excited to start work on it. We hope that this excitement extends to our supporters and to future collaborators. Without you, it simply won’t be possible.
