Tenants in the East-end of Hamilton have declared a rent strike and we need your help to make sure it’s a success.

The decision to strike comes as no surprise. We’ve spent the last 2 years fighting InterRent/ CLV by forming tenant committees, running repair campaigns, and demanding accessibility ramps in our buildings with little or no movement on any of the above. And now, InterRent/CLV wants to raise the rent by almost 10% over the next two years so they can rake in more money for their investors.
Stoney Creek Towers tenants refuse to be priced out of our homes and we demand respect from InterRent/CLV.
Starting May 1st, we will withhold our rent until InterRent/ CLV meets our demands:
1) The withdrawal of the Above Guideline rent Increase (AGI) application and,
2) Addressing the long list of repairs needed in our units
When tenants withhold rent, landlords often respond by issuing eviction notices. If this happens, the Landlord and Tenant Board can require tenants to pay a $190 filing fee for eviction hearings. We’re going to do everything in our power to fight to ensure that no tenants are evicted, but we need your help to do it. In order to help ensure that tenants can be safe and secure in continuing our rent strike, we need to be able to ensure we can cover any filing fees they might encounter. Any funds left over at the end of this strike will be put towards the establishment of a city-wide rent strike defense fund, in order to help support organized tenants who decide to collectively withhold their rent.
Solidarity is a powerful weapon in the hands of working-class people. Defend Hamilton. Support the East Hamilton Rent Strike!
