With much joy in our hearts we celebrate two years of walking collectively in the Agua de Lluvia Little Community School. We celebrate two years of being a good seed, of sowing autonomy, of learning alongside the youth.

Today we celebrate two years, ten years, and five centuries of resistance and struggle. Even with the violence that surrounds us, with the scorn of the bad governments, with the unjust detentions in the region and in other geographies.

We continue walking amidst the war of the capitalist hydra against our communities. From this space we continue believing and demonstrating that dignity and solidarity are our rallying cries. We continue constructing and learning.

We are thankful for the Zapatista teachings, for their words, for their practical example, and for the dignity with which they maintain their struggle.

We thank the compañerxs of the National Indigenous Congress, with whom we have accompanied and sown resistance and solidarity.

From the Mazatec mountains we send our greetings and thanks to each compañera, compañero, compañeroa, of every struggle, collective, and organization, every musician and artist, every campesino, worker, and academic who has walked alongside us during these two years in the different forms dictated by their consciousness and heart.

The little school is possible thanks to all the forces big and small, every day and persistent, of those who make up this project, and those who accompany it from near and far. It is sustained by love, solidarity, and rebellion.

We invite you to continue constructing spaces and community. We do not want to be saved. We want our struggle to serve as an inspiration to continue sowing autonomy. We want this seed to continue reproducing itself in different spaces and territories.

Interview with the Agua de Lluvia Little Community School  

Can you start off by presenting yourselves? Who are you and where are you all located?

Greetings to everyone. We are collaborators with the Agua de Lluvia Little Community School. We are also part of the Movement of Articulation of the Forgotten Peoples of the Cañada (MAPOC) which is our political body. We walk alongside the struggles of other Indigenous peoples who participate in the National Indigenous Congress. Our project is located in the Mazatec region, in the community of Agua de Lluvia, Huautla de Jiménez, Oaxaca.

Can you tell us a little about the Agua de Lluvia Little Community School? What’s the project all about? Who is involved? What are you all trying to do?

This project was born from a mix of circumstance and necessity. As a collective, we had been participating in organizing processes for a number of years. At some point things coincided and we came together to continue this project. The Agua de Lluvia Little Community School has had two important historical moments, each one with different necessities. In the first moment, the project was oriented toward giving more traditional classes and seeking official recognition of the school. As a consequence of the teacher’s struggle in Oaxaca in 2006, there were internal conflicts within the communities and the space was abandoned. In 2015, we decided to take up the project anew from a critical perspective, inspired by other spaces of struggle like Zapatismo.

The project remained on the back burner for a few more years, in that time we were talking with different compañrexs. The conversations led us to the possibility of occupying the abandoned space and converting it into a space of activity. The COVID-19 pandemic was another event which helped make our decision to move forward with the project. The limitations and restrictions were hard on the people of the community of Agua de Lluvia. Children’s parents needed their kids to receive classes and help with their homework. Many parents lacked the necessary tools to provide those things with the schools being closed. This was the inventive we needed. It was not only parents and children wanting to feel human closeness again. As collaborators we’ve always thought of how we can serve our community with the teachings that we have received, whether it is knowledge acquired in school or in the experiences of life.

The project currently has a number of aims. We’ve retaken some of the ideas from the first moment of the project, but have mixed them with new dreams. We want to share knowledge and teachings centered on all types of arts and sciences. We want to bring the children to those teachings. And not only the children, but also the adolescents and adults of the community. We also want to work with other communities to provide people with the tools to develop themselves in their daily lives, in the life of their communities and society. For us, this is an act of justice.

How is the Little Community School related to other forms of community organization in Agua de Lluvia and in the Mazatec region of Oaxaca?

From our spaces, we have sought comradery and solidarity not only with our Mazatec brothers and sisters, but also with other peoples, other struggles, both big and small. Above all, we are always learning from them.

What does autonomy and autonomous education mean for those who participate in the Little Community School?

For us autonomy is having the freedom to learn and share knowledge. It doesn’t matter if you are a child, adult, or adolescent. All knowledge is valuable and should be shared responsibly. That is something that we hold dear. We still fail in many respects but we are learning from our mistakes. For us that is what autonomy and education are all about; experiment, make mistakes, resolve them, take responsibility, and learn. For us there is no absolute knowledge, and there are no foolproof techniques.

What role does the language, forms of organization, customs and traditions of the Mazatec people play in the pedagogy and practice of the school?

They are important elements of our project. Through them we maintain a link with our community and people. Community organization allows us to make possible an idea, project, or festivity. Rescuing our customs and traditions is fundamental because they are part of our identity. Not in the folkloric sense, but in the sense of how we feel, and how we relate to one another. Our customs and traditions strengthen our community ties.

What is the current state of the project and what are your plans for the future?

The project is currently active. It is possible that some of you have visited, others haven’t, maybe you’ve seen things online. Although we don’t always post about our activities, we are active. We continue living and learning alongside the children, youth, and neighbors of the community. We continue making our demands for democracy, justice, education, housing, land, freedom, independence, and peace.

What can people do from near and far to show their solidarity and support for the project?

Our project is self-organized, yet the solidarity and accompaniment we have received has made possible the continuation of the project. One of the possible ways you all can support us is by reproducing and organizing other independent and self-managed spaces. Economic resources are obviously fundamental too. We are always looking for dignified ways to generate and receive donations. If anyone wishes to collaborate they can contact us via email or through social media.

Is there anything else you all would like to share?

We are really happy to celebrate two years functioning publicly. We hope to inspire other struggles and other people to dare to dream about other pedagogies. All of this wouldn’t have been possible without the support of our compañerxs from the community of Agua de Lluvia, who for ten years have continued to support us. We also want to express our gratitude to the compas who have shown their solidarity from Oaxaca, Mexico City, and many other places. You all have made this project more alive than ever. Con mucha alegría en nuestros corazones, hoy celebramos dos años de caminar colectivamente en la Escuelita Comunitaria Agua de Lluvia. Cumplimos dos años de ser buena semilla, de sembrar autonomía, de aprender con las infancias.

Hoy celebramos que dos años después, 10 años después y 5 siglos después seguimos resistiendo y luchando. Aún con las violencias que nos rodean, con los desprecios de los malos gobiernos, los encarcelamientos injustos en la región y en otras geografías.

Aquí seguimos caminando en medio de la guerra de la hidra capitalista contra nuestros pueblos, y desde este espacio seguimos creyendo y sosteniendo que la dignidad y la solidaridad son nuestra bandera. Seguimos construyendo y aprendiendo.

Agradecemos las enseñanzas de l@s compas zapatistas, por su palabra, por sus ejemplos prácticos y por la dignidad con la que mantienen su lucha.

Agradecemos también a nuestros compañeras y compañeras del Congreso Nacional Indígena, con quienes nos acompañamos y tejemos resistencia y solidaridad.

Desde las montañas Mazatecas queremos saludar y agradecer a cada compañera, compañero, compañeroa, a cada lucha, colectivo, organización, a cada músico y artista, a cada campesino, obrer@, academic@ por caminar con nosotros estos dos años desde las distintas formas que le han dictado su consciencia y corazón.

La Escuelita es posible gracias a todos los esfuerzos grandes y pequeños, cotidianos e insistentes de quienes conformamos este proyecto y quienes nos acompañan de cerca y a la distancia. Se sostiene de cariño, solidaridad y rebeldía.

Invitamos a seguir construyendo espacios y comunidad, no queremos ser salvados, queremos que nuestra lucha sirva como inspiración a seguir sembrando autonomía, que esta semilla siga replicándose en distintos espacios y territorios.

Entrevista con lxs compañerxs de la Escuelita Autónoma “Agua de Lluvia”

¿Pueden empezar por presentarse? ¿Quiénes son y dónde están ubicados?

Hola saludos a todas y todos los compas de distintas geografías, Nosotros somos colaboradores y formamos parte del proyecto llamado Escuelita comunitaria Agua de Lluvia, también integramos el Movimiento de Articulación de los Pueblos Olvidados de la Cañada (MAPOC) qué es nuestro organismo político, caminamos junto a las luchas de otros pueblos originarios qué se hermanan en el Congreso Nacional Indígena. Este proyecto se ubica en la región Mazateca de Oaxaca, en la comunidad de Agua de Lluvia, Huautla de Jiménez.

¿Pueden hablarnos un poco de la Escuelita Autónoma “Agua de Lluvia”? ¿En qué consiste el proyecto? ¿Quiénes están involucrado? ¿Qué es lo que se pretende hacer?

Este proyecto nace a partir de una serie de circunstancias y necesidades. Nosotros como colectivo tenemos varios años participando en varios procesos organizativos, eso hizo que en algún momento nos juntáramos, que coincidiéramos en el momento preciso y encontrarnos para hacer continuar este proyecto. La escuelita comunitaria, como lo mencionamos tiene 2 momentos cada uno con diferentes necesidades. En un primer momento la naturaleza de este proyecto consistía en impartir clases y volverse una escuela oficial con clave. Como consecuencia del conflicto magisterial en 2006 en Oaxaca, se reavivaron diversos problemas internos entre comunidades y esto provocó qué quedara abandonado el espacio, pero en el 2015 se decidió retomar el proyecto desde una perspectiva crítica, pensada e inspirada en otros espacios de lucha como el Zapatismo.

El proyecto permaneció varado durante varios años, en ese tiempo fuimos coincidiendo diversos compañeros, lo que nos llevó a pensar en la posibilidad de ocupar ese espacio que estaba abandonado y convertirlo en un espacio de vida, lo que hizo posible el tomar la decisión de ir avanzando en este proyecto fue otro suceso que nos marcó a toda la humanidad, la llegada del Covid 19, las limitantes y restricciones que puso a la vida de las personas, también hizo estragos en la comunidad de Agua de Lluvia, los padres de familia tenían la necesidad de que sus hijos recibieran clases y apoyo en sus tareas, ya que las escuelas estaban cerradas y muchos de ellos carecían de herramientas para llevarlas a cabo. Este fue el empujón que necesitamos, ya que no sólo los padres de familia y los niños querían volver a sentir la cercanía humana, también como colaboradores siempre hemos pensado en retribuir a nuestro pueblo con nuestro servicio las enseñanzas y aprendizajes que hemos recibido, sean conocimientos adquiridos desde la escuela o desde las experiencias de vida. El proyecto actualmente tiene diversos horizontes, retomamos algunos ejes de la primera etapa pero también mezclándose con nuevos sueños, como el de compartir conocimientos y aprendizajes centrado en las artes y las ciencias de todo tipo y acercar a las, los niños y no solo a ellos también a jóvenes y adultos de esta comunidad pero también a los de otras comunidades poner a su alcance herramientas que permitan desenvolverse en su vida cotidiana, en la vida comunitaria y en la sociedad, lo cual se nos hace un acto de justicia.

¿Cómo se relaciona la Escuelita Autónoma con otras formas de organización comunitaria en Agua de Lluvia y en la región Mazateca?

Desde nuestros espacios, hemos puesto como horizonte, la hermandad y la solidaridad no solamente con nuestras hermanas y hermanos Mazatecos, también con otros pueblos, otras luchas pequeñas o grandes, pero sobre todo siempre aprendemos de ellos y ellas.

¿Qué significa la autonomía y la educación autónoma para lxs que participan en la Escuelita?

Autonomía para nosotros significa poder tener la libertad de aprender y compartir los conocimientos que tenemos, no importa si eres una niña, niño, adulta, adulto o una persona joven. Los conocimientos son valiosos y se comparten con mucha responsabilidad, eso es algo que siempre hemos tenido presente, posiblemente seguimos teniendo fallas en muchos aspectos, pero son nuestros errores y estamos aprendiendo de ellos. Para nosotros eso es también autonomía y educación; experimentar, equivocarse, resolver, responsabilizarse y aprender, para nosotros no hay conocimientos absolutos y tampoco técnicas infalibles.

¿Qué papel juegan la lengua, las formas de organización, las costumbres y las tradiciones del pueblo mazateco, en la pedagogía y práctica de la Escuelita?

Son elementos importantes de nuestro proyecto porque a través de ellos mantenemos un vínculo con nuestra comunidad y nuestro pueblo. La organización nos permite que una idea, un proyecto e incluso alguna festividad se haga posible. En cuanto a las costumbres y las tradiciones, el rescate es importante porque forma parte de nuestra identidad, no visto desde el folclor, si no desde nuestro sentir y como nos relacionamos entre todos a partir de esas costumbres y tradiciones y esto fortalece el tejido comunitario.

¿Cuál es el estado actual del proyecto y cuáles son los planes a futuro?

Actualmente el proyecto está activo, posiblemente algunas personas ya lo conozcan y otros no, por lo que se ha visto en las redes sociales, sin embargo, a pesar de que no siempre publicamos nuestras actividades, podemos compartirles que es un proyecto vivo, seguimos conviviendo y aprendiendo con las infancias y juventudes y también con los vecinos del barrio donde está ubicada la escuelita. Seguimos haciendo nuestras las demandas de democracia, justicia, educación, techo, tierra, libertad, independencia, paz.

¿Qué puede hacer la gente de cerca y de lejos para mostrar su solidaridad y apoyar el proyecto?

Nuestro proyecto, es auténticamente autogestivo, pero las muestras de solidaridad y acompañamiento han hecho posible que este proyecto siga caminando, una de las formas que quizás concebimos pueden apoyarnos es tratar de reproducir más espacios, independientes y autogestivos. El recurso económico claramente es fundamental, para ello también buscamos mecanismos dignos para generar o recibir donativos, en este sentido si alguien desea colaborar pueden contactarnos a través de nuestras redes sociales.

¿Hay algo más que les gustaría compartir?

Estamos muy contentos de cumplir estos dos años de vida pública y lograr llegar a inspirar otras luchas y también inspirar a muchas más personas a atreverse soñar en otras pedagogías, todo esto no sería posible sin la ayuda de nuestros compañeros de la comunidad de Agua de lluvia qué 10 años después siguen apoyando, también el Agradecimiento es para nuestros compas solidarios de Oaxaca, CDMX y muchas otras geografías qué han hecho qué este proyecto esté más vivo que nunca, muchas gracias
