Report on re-opening of Birmingham Free Store and current mutual aid programs.
Following the flooding of its original location in June of last year, and a long struggle to find a new building willing to host such a radical project, the Birmingham Free Store is finally reopening for curbside pickup during the COVID-19 outbreak.
The Free Store will be offering a rotating selection of hygiene, childcare, menstrual care, and reproductive justice products for pickup, with no qualifications and no questions asked. Pickup times are from 11am-4pm every Thursday and Sunday at their new location at 2030 Bessemer Rd, and Birmingham residents can schedule their visit using this form to ensure the maximum possible isolation and safety. This isn’t an application form – no one will be turned away. Each pickup will also include leftist reading materials.
The Birmingham Free Store will reopen regular operations as soon as it’s safe to do so. The site will include a community garden and seed library to promote local food sovereignty, in addition to its normal stock of clothing, books, reproductive justice products, and anything else the community donates – all managed by volunteers committed to building a freer Birmingham.
In addition, the Free Store is one of many local groups collaborating with Birmingham Mutual Aid to build a strong network of solidarity and dual power across the Magic City.
