Statement from Prisoners of La Voz Verdadera del Amate in Chiapas

The below statement comes from several members of “The True Voice of El Amate”, a group formed inside El Amate state prison (CERESO No. 14) in Chiapas, Mexico in 2015. Imprisoned for many years for acts they did not commit, these six individuals came together on the inside to collectively organize for their freedom and improved conditions in prison. Here they are demanding adequate representation from the public defender and for transfer to another prison.

November 5th, 2017

On November 5th, 2017, the compañeros here in El Amate met again to make known the actions of the public defender José Andrés López Gómez and the anomalies that have occurred here in Cereso No. 14, El Amate. He has asked for money, hammocks and other things. As he is cheating us, we decided to write the Head of Social Defense of the State of Chiapas and also to the Network Against Repression and for Solidarity.

On October 5th, the Head of the Institute of Public Defense, Anibal G. Corzo Zuarth, accompanied by the Regional Sub-director of El Amate, Gabriel Meneses Dominguez, asked us for our complaints. We told them everything that was happening. That the public defender asked us for money, hammocks and rocking chairs. The officials treated us well and told us that we need to have patience because this case is a process. They said that within a month we would see a result. But at the moment there has not been a change. We are also asking to be translated to where our files are being processed so that are cases are expedited.

We are three compañeros who want to be moved. Our compañero Pascual Gómez Jiménez has already been transferred to Cereso No. 16 “El Encino.”

The compañeros Germán López Montejo, Abraham López Montejo and others dissatisfied are waiting for a change in the public defender, asking that we are reassigned a new lawyer that works diligently on our cases without asking for kickbacks.

We ask the Network Against Repression, as well as the National and International Sixth and those in solidarity to be attentive to our case.

Wherever we are, we will continue the struggle to obtain our freedom.

Compañeros and compañeras, we are very thankful for your support and we also send you our greetings and a big hug.

Thanks.
