The heavy storms in Knoxville on the night of July 20th left our beloved community space Mutual Aid Space Knoxville (MASK) with flooding up to five feet high. This has resulted in a devastating degree of damage that we’re all still trying to process. Much of our community work and programming are now postponed, as nearly everything has been destroyed and cannot be recovered. This includes:

  • Food, toiletries, first aid supplies, and cleaning supplies
  • Thousands of harm reduction supplies (full list here)
  • Book, zine, and resource collection
  • Furniture, appliances, and A/V equipment
  • Items for MASK’s Free Store, including clothing, baby supplies, household items, etc.
  • and much, much more…

We are creating this fundraiser to help with replacing destroyed items, as well as supplies we will need (wheel barrow, shovels, gloves, dehumidifier, dumpster rental, etc) to clear out the space and clean up the damages.

We are also creating this fundraiser in consideration for the future. Because much of the damage is long-term, we will have to consider vacating our current space at 2917 Central St and seeking out a new home. This is a devastating realization, as many people have put so much work into building up our current space, but our community deserves a place that is clean and safe. We hope that any additional funds will be able to help us secure a new space.

MASK has been home to local groups such as First Aid Collective Knoxville, Knoxville Radical Library, and East Tennessee Harm Reduction, who have been able to use this space for storage, distribution, skillshares, and events. Many community members have also used MASK as meeting space for various endeavors, from labor organizing to crafting and DIY projects. We are very thankful for everyone involved that has helped to make MASK a joyful community space for the past year and a half and know that we will get through this.
