In Contempt #36: Hunger Strikes at Red Onion Prison and NWDC, Eric King Released

In this column, we present our monthly roundup of political prisoner, prison rebel, and repression news, happenings, announcements, action and analysis. Packed in as always are updates, fundraisers, and birthdays.

There’s a lot happening, so let’s dive right in!

New Year’s Eve Noise Demos

This new year’s eve, people in over 20 cities across the so-called US and Canada took to the streets to make noise outside of jails, detention centers, and prisons. It’s Going Down is currently working on a roundup, but so far, reports have been published from Chicago and Austin, Texas. These rallies take place against a backdrop of law enforcement in the United States, according to Mapping Police Violence, “kill[ing] at least 1,213 people this year in the US, slightly more than the 1,202 deaths tabulated by MPV in 2022,” as borders continue to militarize and the US escalates its war machine.

Political Prisoner News

December 2023 saw two names being crossed off the list of political prisoners for very different reasons. Anarchist prisoner Eric King was finally released to a halfway house after almost a decade inside the federal system, and Unicorn Riot were able to report on some of his first moments of freedom.

On a sadder note, long-term Black Panther prisoner Ed Poindexter passed away behind bars at the age of 83, after spending over 50 years in prison. You can watch his memorial service here, and read this profile to learn more about his life.

Chicano anarchist prisoner Xinachtli recently published a tribute to Ricardo Flores Magon, as well as a statement of solidarity with the Palestinian people. From Xinachtli’s tribute to Magon:

A political prisoner support movement was born, led by feminist, anarchist activist Emma Goldman, Eugene W. Debs, the Industrial Workers of the World, among others, to free Ricardo and other “Magonistas.” Ricardo Flores Magon was assassinated on November 21, 1922 at Leavenworth prison, strangled through his prison cell bars as he slept at night. Prisoners there accused the government and their inmate mercenaries as responsible for his murder.

ALTHOUGH GOVERNMENT AND PRISON FASCISM KILLED RICARDO FLORES MAGON, he will live forever in our minds and hearts, in time immemorial, for, as this tribute shows, racism, capitalism, imperialism, fascism, will never kill our dreams to be free of predatory capitalism and its genocidal, murderous prisons of mass incarceration.

Today, November 21, 2023, 101 Years after his assassination, RICARDO’S dreams and visions did not die with him, and live on, until we are all free of such evil, criminal systems of racism and oppression. Ricardo’s visions become stronger and more relevant as we struggle to free ourselves of the bondage chains of the systems of capitalism and imperialism, as fascism is on the rise.

Our rulers’ interests are for corporate greed, in creating, or sponsoring wars financed by our taxpayer dollars, while ignoring people’s basic human needs to sustain their white privileges and seek out new colonies in third world underdeveloped countries displacing oppressed communities superimposing against them their criminal system of wage-theft robbery for their own enrichment, and polluting our air, rivers, oceans, ecosystems, creating climate crisis that threaten Earth. THE REVOLUTIONARY ETHOS PREACHED BY RICARDO FLORES MAGON MUST TAKE CENTER STAGE IF WE ARE TRULY INTERESTED IN A TRUE SOCIAL, HUMAN LIBERATION!

Mexican anarchist prisoner Tiara Tempestad also recently shared an article about her situation, as she moves one step closer to her release.

Stop Cop City, Uprising Defendants and other Ongoing Cases

The Final Straw Radio recently broadcast an interview looking at the Stop Cop City RICO cases as the first defendant moves toward their trial. The defendant, Ayla, has had their trial postponed until January, and is requesting financial support in the meantime, asking for money to be sent via Venmo or cash app to antiableistaction.

The Final Straw also recently shared an update on the struggle against the Mountain Valley Pipeline, which is also facing increased repression. You can read more about the use of “SLAPP” lawsuits to target the movement here, and Unoffensive Animal have shared a statement from a Mountain Valley defendant who’s just been given a three-month sentence. From the statement:

To cope with being locked up, I turned my thoughts away from missing experiences of the outside world. Now that I’m out on appeal, I’m gradually allowing myself to appreciate the beauty of so-called Virginia (and this planet!!). Part of the release process included a transport van ride, and I was joyfully surprised to be greeted by a daytime waxing moon. The next morning I was awoken by sunlight through a window, not the loud click of the cell doors popping open and a breakfast call at 4am. Winter solstice, and as many evenings as possible, have included a warming fire. The temperature rises and falls with sunrises and sunsets, and varies with cloud cover. I can feel breezes and hear birds. This planet is so beautiful; I can’t get over it.

Most days when I was in jail we weren’t offered rec, but one morning I was able to catch a sunrise in the “outdoor” yard. It was too early for anyone else to want to join me for basketball, so I listened to the birds and caught a few rays and inhaled some slightly smokey fresh air (while also practicing my layups). My last day in jail, we were offered rec at a reasonable hour and almost everyone chose to go. It was in the same yard: 3 cinder block walls and a ceiling, with one wall of thick metal fencing facing east. The view is of hills, some rocky cliffs, and an old cemetery. That day at rec, people shot hoops, some jostled for the ball, and many walked (or jogged or danced) laps around the half-court. Several people stared out at the hills almost the entire 45 minutes. While taking a shot, one of my roommates announced ‘This is the happiest I’ve been in four months!’

I doubt the experience of me and a few dozen other people marveling at the sight of a simple blue sky could be replicated in many another circumstances. Jail is a super fucked up institution, and when we don’t have much we tend to appreciate more.

For as much abuse as the planet receives, she never gives up, and she never stops trying to live. She rests, and, when given half a chance, bounces back stronger than ever. Whatever she can give, she does so generously. She’s my hero and role model, and the most important person for me to honor this season.

Doooooom to the pipeline! Stop MVP!

Eugene Jail Support are asking for donations to help pay fines for Raven, a young defendant from the George Floyd Uprising who was given fines worth tens of thousands of dollars. To donate, Venmo @EugeneBailFund. The Uprising Support website has recently gone through a major update, and now has full individual profiles for each remaining uprising prisoner they support – check out the updated listings here.

Epona Rose in so-called Flagstaff is still fighting charges after defending herself from a group of violent attackers. For more info on her case and ways to donate, go here.

The Tampa 5, who were facing felony charges for a campus protest against Ron DeSantis’ far-Right agenda, have now had their felony charges dropped. You can see their reactions to the announcement here.

In Ohio, Soren Monroe has pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge for Jane’s Revenge graffiti targeting a pro-life fake clinic, and will face sentencing in April. You can read an interview with Soren here. Unicorn Riot also has a report up about an activist in Wisconsin who was recently sentanced for carrying out an action under the banner of Jane’s Revenge.

From the report:

On November 16, Roychowdhury signed a plea agreement admitting to the crime. The agreement, which does not mention the conduct of any individuals besides Roychowdhury himself, carries a “mandatory minimum penalty of five years in prison, and maximum penalties of 20 years in prison, a $250,000 fine … ,” supervised release and restitution, according to the plea deal. Roychowdhury was held in jail since his arrest in the Boston area in March; he is currently incarcerated in Wisconsin under the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service. The case has been prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Elizabeth Altman for the Western District of Wisconsin and Trial Attorney Justin Sher of the Department of Justice (DOJ) National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section.

In late July, a federal judge ruled Roychowdhury must remain in jail until his case resolves, writing that “the court finds that there is strong evidence to suggest that … defendant and two others attempted to firebomb the office of a group holding political views with which defendant disagrees,” and that “no combination of conditions will reasonably assure the safety of at least some others in the community.”

Houston Food Not Bombs continues to face police harassment for feeding the homeless, with local outlets such as KHOU, Houston Public Media and The Messenger reporting on their continued work in the face of 84 police citations this year.

The International Antifascist Defense Fund have helped to support a journalist facing criminal charges after writing an article about a statue of a Nazi collaborator being defaced, as well as two Black women facing charges for anti-racist organizing in Calgary. The Fund had to run a fundraising appeal throughout December in order to continue their work, and have now met their goals, but ongoing donations are still needed. During the appeal, recent defendant Leif shared a video showing how the Fund had helped in their case.

Hunger Strikes at Red Onion Prison and Northwest Detention Center

At Red Onion State Prison in Virginia, longtime prison organizer Kevin “Rashid” Johnson and several other prisoners have started a hunger strike. From the San Francisco Bay View:

During the strike, it is being asked that supporters contact the Virginia Department of Corrections as well as the governor of Virginia to demand an end – in fact as well as theory – to this controversial practice. Tell the officials that the hunger strikers have our full support.

All readers who believe in freedom are asked to read this story and then contact the following Virginia officials:

–  David Robinson, VADOC Central Administration, P.O. Box 26963, Richmond, VA 23261, 804-887-8078, [email protected]

–  Virginia DOC Director Chadwick S Dotson, 804-674-3081, [email protected]

–  Rose L. Durbin, VADOC Central Administration, 804-887-7921, [email protected]

–  Beth Cabell, Division of Institutions, 804-834-9967, beth.cabell@vadoc

–  Gov. Glenn Youngkin, 804-786-2211, [email protected]

This is Rashid’s list of demands:

“1. To stop the censorship of my writings and correspondence, especially with publishers and media people, which many of my correspondents are.

“2. Stop manipulating policies, statuses and circumstances to keep me incommunicado.

“3. Return me to Sussex 1 State Prison where I can receive medical care for symptomatic chronic heart failure and chronic edema.

“4. Remove me from solitary confinement and referral to ROSP’s long term segregation/step down program.

“5. Remove me from ROSP and Wise County, where clearly I am targeted with vendettas from past confinement and resistance to exposures of abuses. Recall I was held in illegal solitary confinement here at ROSP and Wallens Ridge State Prison for 14 years (by many of the same people still working at these prisons and over this western region who are now ranking officials).

“6. Stop retaliation for my writings exposing abuses of prisoners within VDOC prisons.”

At the Northwest Detention Center near Tacoma, detainees have been on hunger strike since November. La Resistencia are organizing outside support almost daily for their action, and can be followed on facebook, instagram, tiktok or twitter.

Prison Tech, Mail Digitization and Censorship

The related topics of prison censorship, digitization and tech companies have received a bit of mainstream media attention recently. LitHub have an article looking at why prisons ban fantasy and science fiction books, while the Marshall Project recently ran a detailed investigation on the growing trend of prisons banning books under the guise of cracking down on drug smuggling, and TIME have also reported on the massive scale of book censorship in prisons.

Slate ran a series of articles looking at the growing use of technology in prisons, with the article “The Robber Barons of Prison Tech” being particularly important.

On the topic of censorship and prison technology, some important news to share: the Missouri system, which recently adopted an extremely harsh policy banning books and magazines being sent in from the outside, currently advises people that they can send funds to prisoners through Securus and the prisoners can then order books or magazines themselves. This information is inaccurate, while the mailing system has been moved over to Securus, funds can currently only be sent to Missouri prisoners through JPay. It’s not clear whether the decision is made by Securus/JPay or the Missouri prison system, but the digital mailing system used for Missouri prisoners is subject to absurdly harsh censorship, with prisoners being banned from receiving pictures of themselves:

General Prison news and Abolitionist Media

A call has gone out for a phone and email zap to support Lilith, a trans woman who has been assaulted and held in solitary confinement at Eastern CI in Maryland.

A phone zap was also called for anarchist prisoner Noah “Kado” Coffin, who was cleared for parole in 2022 but still had not been given a release date by the start of December. At time of writing, TDCJ info lists Kado as having been transferred to Byrd, a temporary transfer location, and his release date has been set as “2024-01-04”, so he should be out in the extremely near future.

The Texas Civil Rights Project recently released a major report on the use of solitary confinement in the Texas prison system, while another report has revealed how many Texas death penalty cases involved court-appointed lawyers who failed to provide adequate representation for their clients, leaving out important aspects of the case that could have influenced their sentencing.

A class action lawsuit has been filed against the state of Alabama, aiming to dismantle the “convict leasing” system that allows prisoners to be leased out to employers such as McDonald’s, KFC and Wendys. One of the plaintiffs, Alimireo English, who works unpaid for the prison system and was recently denied parole, told the New York Times: “They deny us parole to keep us doing the jobs… The mentality is: ‘Why would the slave master let the slave go when he can continue working him for free?’” Meanwhile, another lawsuit against the Alabama prison system alleges that a guard attempted to arrange the murder of Kinetic Justice/Robert Earl Council, an organizer with the Free Alabama Movement who has been involved in several prison strikes.

From The Guardian:

A lawsuit has been filed against the Alabama department of corrections (ADoC) alleging a guard encouraged prisoners to murder an activist currently incarcerated at the Limestone correctional facility in Harvest, Alabama.

The complaint alleges a lieutenant correctional officer encouraged other prisoners to murder Robert Earl Council, a lead organizer in the 2022 Alabama prison strikes. “Even if y’all killed him, I’ll make sure nothing happens to y’all,” Jeremy Pelzer told Crips gang members at Limestone prison in June, according to the suit.

“I want Robert Council … I’m tired of this bastard and all his lawsuits,” Pelzer allegedly told another prisoner in 2019.

Council is at “a substantial risk of being assaulted or murdered by Lt Jeremy Pelzer, other Limestone correctional facility (‘Limestone’) officers, or inmates who act at their behest, and who have constant access to the solitary confinement cell where Plaintiff Council is housed at Limestone”, according to the suit, filed in Alabama this month. An evidentiary hearing is scheduled for 30 November.

The Appeal has seen documents showing that the state of Louisiana is paying tens of thousands of dollars per month to jail kids in the Jackson Parish Jail, an adult jail. The Louisiana prison system had faced widespread criticism for keeping minors at the former death row unit in Angola, and had publicly announced that they had been moved to “a new juvenile justice facility,” while actually just sending them to an adult jail.

The Guardian has published a report from Kory McClay, a writer incarcerated in the New Jersey system who is housed on the floor below “the crazy unit” at New Jersey State Prison.

The family of Joshua Lemore, an inmate who was starved to death while held in solitary confinement at the Jackson County jail in Indiana, have sued the county for $7.25 million. In other news from the Indiana system, IDOC Watch have shared a report on the extended lockdown and starvation diets that have been ongoing at Pendleton CF, and an account of the case of Jackie Taylor, an inmate who was paroled with no support and then reincarcerated for “violations” such as “failing to report change of address” because he chose to sleep in a park after learning that his parole address was being used as a drug den.

Mongoose Distro continues to regularly publish prisoner writings such as “Viriginia Has No Jurisidction” by David Annarelli. Kite Line Radio recently returned with a round-up of prison disturbances and resistance, as well as an interview with an Oregon anarchist prisoner.

International

In Chile, anarchists Mónica Caballero and Francisco Solar have received prison sentences of 12 and 86 years respectively for their role in a series of explosive attacks. Unoffensive Animal has shared profiles of the Susaron 4, anarchist/animal liberation defendants held in prison awaiting trial for an alleged arson against a meat company.

Moscow Anarchist Black Cross have published an update on the general situation with anarchist and anti-fascist prisoners in Russia, and defendants in the Tyumen case are now facing new harsher charges. You can read a profile of Tyumen case defendant Yuri Neznamov here, and one of his co-defendant Danil Chertykov here.

One major piece of news is that Russian anarchist Ruslan Siddiqui is now awaiting trial on charges of sabotaging infrastructure connected to the war effort. Solidarity Zone are helping with his legal defense, and you can donate to this via paypal at [email protected], adding a note saying “for Siddiqui” if you want the money to go specifically to his defense. If possible euros are the preferred currency, and they also accept cryptocurrency.

In neighboring Belarus, Belarus ABC have also published their latest monthly round-up of anarchist prisoner news.

In the UK, Bristol ABC have put out a call for donations, as they continue to support a number of defendants from the March 2021 Kill the Bill case, including ten people currently incarcerated. UK anarchist prisoner Toby Shone has published a new article on prison slavery, as well as a letter in remembrance of insurrectionary anarchist Alfredo Bonanno. Bonanno has also been memorialized by Greek anarchist prisoner Nikos Maziotis.

The December 8 case has now finished in France, with the defendants receiving sentences ranging from two years’ suspended sentence to five years, with the harshest sentence being given to Libre Flot, an anarchist who fought with the YPG in Rojava and who was held in prison before the trial. You can read more about the case at the December 8th solidarity site.

Greek anarchist prisoner Nikos Maziotis has had his parole application rejected for a fourth time, and in neighboring Cyprus, the International Anti-Fascist Defense Fund are supporting defendants charged with an alleged attack on the offices of the far-Right party ELAM. The attack on ELAM, which has links to Golden Dawn in Greece, took place after a number of racist attacks in the area, and you can learn more about the case in this video.

Khalida Jarrar, a feminist and leftist activist who has long been a part of the Palestinian prisoner support movement, has been seized as part of a mass arrest in the West Bank. Khalida’s daughter died during her previous imprisonment, and you can read more about Khalida in her own words here.

Atlanta Forest Defendants

According to Unoffensive Animal, the current list of Atlanta Forest/Cop City defendants is:

People who can accept any letter type or length:

  • pen and marker only
  • mail is scanned digitally to jail
