In Defense of Anarchist Memory: One-Hundred Years Since the Death of Ricardo Flores Magón

Statement from anarchists in so-called Mexico calling for a year of activity to defend and continue the anarchist memory of Ricardo Flores Magón, one-hundred years since his death. La versión en español sigue a la versión en inglés.

On November 21, 1922, the anarchist Ricardo Flores Magón was assassinated in a prison cell in Leavenworth, Kansas, in the United States. One-hundred years since his assassination at the hands of henchmen of the United States government, official history has sought to sugarcoat the life and struggle of Flores Magón and the Mexican Liberal Party (PLM), presenting him as a “precursor” to the so-called “Mexican revolution,” and of the reformism of Francisco I. Madero. They have tried to portray Ricardo Flores Magón as a journalist and liberal writer who fought against the Porfirio Díaz dictatorship, seeking to erase his revolutionary and anarchist character, in order to recover his figure and use it for political capital.

Ricardo Flores Magón was against all caudillismo and cult of personality. He energetically rejected the nickname “Magonismo” to refer to the anarchists of the PLM affirming that this was a term used by the government to make people believe that it was just another movement like “Maderismo.” The term was not only rejected by Ricardo Flores Magón, but also by the men and women of the PLM, “As anarchists we do not have idols,” they said. Today, those in power seek to use the term “Magonismo” to confuse people and avoid calling the PLM and Flores Magón as they were: anarchists. Hiding, at the convenience of their interests, what these anarchists truly fought for and to what they offered their lives: the abolition of private property, church, and state.

Ricardo Flores Magón was a committed anarchist, combatting throughout his life what he called the dark trinity: authority, capital, and clergy. For that reason, he experienced persecution, exile, imprisonment. Yet, his unbreakable spirit felt a passion for freedom so immense, that none of the torture inflicted upon him succeeded in appeasing that flame which burned in his chest. Together with other men and women, he promoted social revolution from below. A revolution that didn’t seek to raise a new tyrant to power, but rather to destroy the very foundations of the capitalist system of domination and exploitation, so that the red flag of land and freedom could wave high and free like the wind, for everyone.

With the announcement of the so-called Fourth Transformation (4T) declaring 2022 as the year of Ricardo Flores Magón, as anarchist individuals and collectives, we declare that the memory of Magón and the PLM cannot be recuperated by the grotesque morning news conference spectacles of López Obrador. On the contrary, we reaffirm that the memory of the PLM forms part of the history of the struggles of the people for their emancipation and freedom. It is the history of Ricardo and Enrique Flores Magón, of Librado Rivera, Práxedis Guerrero, Anselmo Figueroa, of the Indigenous Mayo Fernando Palomares, of the Indigenous Yaqui Javier Huitimea, of Hilario Salas, of the mythical Santanón, of Cándido Donato Padua, Blas Lara, Emilio Guerrero, of the Indigenous Tarahumara Camilio Jiménez, of the tireless Nicolás T. Bernal, of Joe Hill, Jack Mosby, and the Wobblies, of the compañeras Margarita Ortega, Maria Talavera, Teresa Brousse, Concha Rivera, of Francisco Mendoza, of Jesús Rangel, of the newspaper Regenaración, of the brave PLM guerrilla fighters, of the strike at Río Blanco, at Cananea, of the insurrections of Acayucan, Las Vacas, or Palomas. It is the history of thousands of insurrectionary women and men who struggled in the ranks of the PLM for the freedom and regeneration of community.

It is the memory of rural and city workers who struggled to end economic exploitation. It is the memory of our fallen compañerxs like Tobi, Ruffo, Sacra, and so many others who gave their lives for a free world, of men and women who sought to do away with borders and flags, of those who dreamed to destroy prisons, police, and militaries. It is the memory of those of us who are enemies of all states, all authoritarianism, and all hierarchy.

For everything above, we invite anarchist collectives, organizations, and individuals to participate in the Activities in Defense of Anarchist Memory: 100 Years Since the Death of Ricardo Flores Magón, beginning on January 7, 2022, the 115^th anniversary of the strike in Río Blanco, until December 30, 2022, 112^th anniversary of the death of Práxedis G. Guerrero.

It is not our intention to add another date to the book of saints of the left. They already have too many martyrs and heroes. Our aspiration is to rescue anarchist memory, to know, remember, study, divulge, and propagate it, in order to continue writing the history of anarchist struggle through action. To this end, we invite all anarchists, those proud to be such, to organize forums, discussions, book presentations, study groups, art exhibitions, movie presentations, radio programs, rallies, meetings, concentrations, mobilizations, and anything that will help us turn memory, our memory, into an anarchist weapon against all tyrants and oppressors. The fight for our memory is another area of struggle against our oppressors and we are ready to give it.

Today just as yesterday, the exploiters are maintained by blood and fire. As all authority, the so-called Fourth Transformation (4T) utilizes violence and repression to impose its politics and megaprojects, and not at any moment has it hesitated to persecute, assassinate, and imprison anyone who defies it. This is the case of the seven compañeros of the community assembly of Eloxochitlán de Flores Magón, in the Sierra Mazateca of Oaxaca, birthplace of Ricardo, who have been in prison for over seven years for maintaining alive their community autonomy, resisting with tenacity and courage the continued attacks on part of the owners of money and power.

Thus, while paying homage to the legacy of Ricardo Flores Magón, the so-called Fourth Transformation (4T) continues to reinforce capitalist oppression. On one hand it manages it, with the implementation of assistance and palliative programs which do nothing to reverse the misery and suffering of the thousands of proletarian and Indigenous women and men who live in this region. On the other hand, it magnifies it, with an alarming expansion of militarization in our communities in order to impose megaprojects like the poorly named Mayan Train and the Interoceanic Corridor, deepening the dispossession of territory and the devastation of the earth, in benefit of the dominant class.

One hundred year since the death of Ricardo Flores Magón, as anarchists we will continue to wave the black flag of freedom. We continue opposing whatever government, no matter if they say they are of the left, because for us “changing the master is not a source of freedom nor well-being.”

Let’s continue the example of the anarchists of the Mexican Liberal party, fighting for life, holding up the flag of Regeneración, seeking land, bread, and freedom for everyone. With rebellion we shout, while we move like water.

Jornadas por la memoria anarquista

A 100 años de la muerte de Ricardo Flores Magón

“Que cada hombre y mujer que amen la libertad y el ideal anarquista, lo propague con empeño, con terquedad, sin hacer aprecio de las burlas, sin medir peligro, sin reparar en consecuencias; y manos a la obra camaradas y el porvenir será para nuestro ideal libertario”.

El 21 de noviembre de 1922 murió asesinado en una celda de la cárcel de Leavenworth, Kansas, Estados Unidos, el anarquista Ricardo Flores Magón. A 100 años de su asesinato, a manos de un esbirro del gobierno estadounidense, la historia oficial pretende edulcorar la vida y lucha de Flores Magón y el Partido Liberal Mexicano, presentándolo como “precursor” de la llamada “Revolución mexicana” y del reformismo maderista. Lo intentan hacer pasar como un periodista y escritor liberal que luchó contra la dictadura porfirista. Pretenden relegar su carácter revolucionario y anarquista, para, así, poder recuperar su figura, hacer uso de ella y ganar capital político.

Ricardo Flores Magón fue contrario a todo caudillismo y culto a la personalidad. Rechazó enérgicamente el mote “magonismo” para referirse a lxs anarquistas del PLM, afirmando que éste no era sino un término que el gobierno utilizaba para hacer creer que se trataba de un movimiento más, como el maderismo. El término no sólo fue rechazado por Ricardo Flores Magón, sino por el conjunto de hombres y mujeres que formaban parte del PLM: “lxs anarquistas no tenemos ídolos”, sentenciaban. Hoy, quienes están en el poder pretenden utilizar el término “magonismo”, para confundir al pueblo mexicano y evitar llamar al PLM y a Flores Magón como lo que eran: anarquistas. Ocultando, a conveniencia de sus intereses, por lo que realmente lucharon y por lo que ofrendaron su vida: la abolición de la propiedad privada, la Iglesia y todo tipo de Estado.

Ricardo Flores Magón fue un anarquista consecuente. Combatió toda su vida a lo que llamó la trinidad sombría: Autoridad, Capital y Clero. Por esa razón,su cuerpo experimentó la persecución, el exilio y el encarcelamiento. Pero su espíritu, inquebrantable, sentía una pasión por la libertad tan inmensa, que ninguno de los suplicios infligidos logró apaciguar esa llama de fuego al rojo vivo que ardía en su pecho. Junto a hombres y mujeres impulsó la revolución social desde abajo. Una revolución que no buscaba encumbrar a un nuevo tirano en el poder, sino destruir los cimientos mismo del sistema capitalista, de dominación y explotación, para que ondeara en lo alto, y libre como el viento, la bandera roja de Tierra y Libertad para todxs.

Ante el anuncio de la 4T, declarando este 2022 como año de Ricardo Flores Magón, lxs individualidades y colectivxs anarquistas declaramos que la memoria de Magón y el PLM no puede ser recuperada por el grotesco espectáculo mañanero de López Obrador. Por el contrario, reafirmamos que la memoria del PLM forma parte de la historia de las luchas de los pueblos por su emancipación y libertad. Es la historia de Ricardo y Enrique Flores Magón, de Librado Rivera, Práxedis Guerrero, Anselmo Figueroa, del Mayo Fernando Palomares, el Yaqui Javier Huitimea, de Hilario Salas, del mítico Santanón, de Cándido Donato Padua, Blas Lara, Emilio Guerrero, del Tarahumara Camilo Jiménez, del infatigable Nicolás Bernal, de Joe Hill, Jack Mosby y los wobblies, de las compañeras Margarita Ortega, María Talavera, Teresa Brousse, Concha Rivera, Francisca Mendoza, Jesús Rangel, del periódico Regeneración, de los bravos guerrilleros del PLM, de la huelga de Río Blanco, de Cananea, de las insurrecciones de Acayucan, Las Vacas o Palomas. Es la historia de miles de mujeres y hombres insurrectos que lucharon en las filas del PLM por la libertad y la regeneración de la comunidad.

Es la memoria de las y los trabajadores del campo y la ciudad que luchan por terminar con la explotación económica; Es la memoria de nuestrxs compañerxs caídos como Tobi, Ruffo, Sacra y tantas y tantos que dejaron su vida por un mundo libre, de los hombres y mujeres que buscan acabar con fronteras y banderas. De las que sueñan con destruir las cárceles, las policías y los ejércitos. Es la memoria de lxs que somos enemigxs de todo Estado, de todo autoritarismo y toda jerarquía.

Por lo antes expuesto, invitamos a lxs colectivxs, organizaciones e individualidades anarquistas a las Jornadas por la Memoria Anarquista; a 100 años de la muerte de Ricardo Flores Magón.Iniciando el 7 de enero de 2022, 115 aniversario de la huelga de Río Blanco. Clausurándolas el 30 de diciembre de 2022, 112 aniversario de la muerte de Práxedis G. Guerrero.

No es nuestra intención sumar una fecha más al santoral de la izquierda. Ellos ya tienen demasiados mártires y héroes. Nuestra aspiración es rescatar la memoria anarquista, es conocer, recordar, estudiar, divulgar y difundir nuestra historia, para así seguir escribiendo las páginas de las luchas libertarias a través de la acción. Para conseguirlo, invitamos a todx libertarix, preciadx de serlo, a darse a la tarea de organizar foros, conversatorios, presentaciones de libros, círculos de estudio, exposiciones de arte, proyecciones de películas, programas de radio, mítines, concentraciones y todo aquello que permita convertir a la memoria, nuestra memoria, en un arma libertaria contra todo tirano y opresor. El combate por la memoria es un escenario más de la lucha contra nuestrxs opresores, estamos dispuestxs a darla.

Hoy como ayer, los explotadores se mantienen a fuego y sangre. Como toda autoridad, la 4T se vale de la violencia y la represión para imponer sus políticas y megaproyectos, en ningún momento ha titubeado en perseguir, asesinar o encarcelar a quien la desafían. Éste es el caso de lxs  siete compañerxs presxs, que llevan siete años en la carcel,  de la Asamblea de Eloxochitlán de Flores Magón, en la sierra mazateca, cuna de Ricardo, quienes han logrado mantener viva la autonomía comunitaria, resistiendo, con tenacidad y valentía, los continuos ataques patrocinados por lxs dueñxs del dinero y del poder.

Así, mientras homenajean el legado de Ricardo Flores Magón, la llamada cuarta transformación, continúa reforzando la opresión capitalista. Gestionándola, por un lado, con programas asistencialistas y paliativos que en nada revierten la miseria y sufrimiento de millones de proletarixs que habitamos esta región; y, por el otro, un alarmante aumento de la militarización de nuestras comunidades Todo con el fin de imponer megaproyectos como el mal llamado Tren Maya o el Transístmico , profundizando el despojo del territorio y la devastación de la tierra, en beneficio de la clase dominante.

A cien años de la muerte de Ricardo Flores Magón, las anarquistas continuamos ondeando la bandera negra de la libertad. Seguimos oponiéndonos a cualquier gobierno, no importa si se dice de izquierda, para nosotrxs“el cambio de amo no es fuente de libertad ni de bienestar”.

Imitemos el ejemplo de las y los anarquistas del Partido Liberal Mexicano, vayamos hacia la vida, levantando la bandera de la regeneración, buscando Tierra, pan y libertad para todxs. Rebeldía gritamos, mientras nos despeñamos como el agua.
