As Irish people we must not allow racists to use us or our history against other immigrant communities being targeted by Trump.

There are 50,000 undocumented Irish immigrants living in the United States. Although we have a long history of terrorism you’ll never hear us spoken of when travel bans are discussed. When we came to this country, we took work in factories and many positions in government but you’ll never hear us spoken of when people talk of immigrants stealing American jobs. According to the press and politicians the Irish are undocumented and Mexicans are illegal. Muslims get bans, Mexicans get walls and the Irish get a meeting in the oval office to discuss the matter.
We must not allow our people and history to be used by racists in their narratives about good and bad immigrants.
Media and politicans always refer to the "undocumented Irish" & would never say "illegal Irish", wonder why?!?! pic.twitter.com/J6zwoAc15z

This Saint Patrick’s Day, instead of raising a glass of Guinness, let us raise our fists in solidarity with the immigrant communities being targeted by the Trump administration and reject white supremacy. May we remember and channel the spirit of the Batallón de San Patricio, formed in 1846 by Irish immigrants who deserted the US army to fight for Mexico in the Mexican-American War. Let us not forget where we came from, let us cling tightly to our culture of resistance and may our voices be heard loud and clear when we join the chorus of “no ban, no wall”!
Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
