On the dawn of Superbowl LI, a small rag-tag crew in Houston Texas of the Dirty South was proud to funnel weeks of sweat, tears, a little blood, and a lot of anxiety into a simple statement: “Fuck Trump. Fuck Cops. Fuck Nazis.” Our cherished behemoth of a banner only flew gracefully over downtown for a matter of hours before the city scrambled to remove any trace of it from the 30th floor of an abandoned holiday inn. Still, we can only hope that, underneath the day’s facade of decorations and festivities, at least a few sincere uncensored words from working class tenants of this city can rest on the skyline among all the other sparkling high places where we will never be welcome.
We know the limits of the media spectacle which actions like this are often confined to. Pragmatically however, we are mostly just glad to have this logistically daunting experience under our belts now, and hope that it might inspire others to take on tasks that might otherwise seem beyond reach.
